Own Correspondent, Dhaka, May 17: The Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, said that the people of Dhaka should not be bothered by waterlogging this time. Hopefully, the rainwater will be drained within half an hour this year.

He expressed this hope at a press conference on Monday on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of his assumption of office as DSCC Mayor.

The mayor further said, "Dhaka residents did not have to suffer from waterlogging last year due to removal of waste and silt from canals and box culverts and construction and development of infrastructure. Even though it is raining heavily, the rain water has been drained out within one hour. We are hopeful that we will be able to give more benefits to the people of Dhaka this year. We hope that the rainwater will be drained within 30 minutes this year."

Mentioning that Dhaka South City Corporation would be number one in the list of corruption-free institutions in the country, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said, "On the completion of two years of my assignment, I would like to say firmly that we have created a position in terms of being free from corruption."

The mayor said, "We will take immediate action as per the plan. No organization can do business in Dhaka city without registration (trade license). Everyone needs to get approval for commercial activities."

Regarding road digging, he said, "We have been able to reduce uncontrolled road digging to a great extent. Many have asked permission to dig the road. But we were not allowed to dig anywhere before the rains. We have said that no road will be allowed to be dug before September."

Calling for closing of shops in the capital after 8 pm to reduce road congestion, Taposh said, "There are many more good things out there. If this can be done then everyone can give more time to the family. Family bondings will be stronger. Just as the father will return home after closing the shop, the son of the house will also think that the father has returned home and I will return home soon. It is now seen that a businessman stays open till night in his business establishment, even returning home late. When the shops close after 8 pm, the traffic congestion in the city will also come under control."
