He made the remarks at the inaugural function of re-excavation work in Dhaka's Shahid Nagar area on Wednesday (June 29).

The mayor said that at the initial stage, 2.7 km section of the Old Buriganga channel will be re-excavated. Boundaries will be determined simultaniously. We will determine the boundaries of the Old Buriganga in full by looking at the CS map. Then I will carry out the excavation activities with the fence.

Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh said that the channel is being excavated with the financial support of South City corporation.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had expressed her intention to re-excavate the Old Buriganga channel in 2018. We have started this activity with Tk 21.5 crore allocated by Dhaka South City Corporation. More allocations will be made in the next financial year.

The mayor said a major initiative will be taken with the Old Buriganga channel, adding that activities have been undertaken in the light of the master plan for the entire Kamrangirchar.

"I have been working on how to create an aesthetic environment around Old Buriganga, Kamrangirchar, Lalbagh, Hazaribagh, Chawkbazar and Old Dhaka, and how to restore the flow of the river and give a livable city as per the expectations of the people of Dhaka," he said.
