Real elections only when voters can vote freely: CEC

Dhaka, May 31: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said that if the voters can vote freely, it will be a real election.

He said this in the chief guest's speech at the meeting on law and order with election related officials, executive magistrates and members of the law and order enforcement forces on the occasion of the city corporation election at the Khulna Deputy Commissioner's conference room on Tuesday.

CEC said that our aim is to make the upcoming Khulna City Corporation elections free, fair, peaceful and festive. For that purpose, everyone must fulfill their responsibility in a coordinated manner.

He said that in any major election, the main responsibility of the district administration and police administration along with other law enforcement agencies. There is a democratic system of government in our country. Local government institutions in the country are governed by elected representatives.

The Chief Election Commissioner also said that elections are very important. Government is formed through elections, be it local government or national government. Local government has to be elected to uphold the constitution. If the opinion of the people is reflected in the election and if the voters can freely, impartially and independently exercise their right to vote, that will be a real election.

Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retired) Md. Ahsan Habib Khan and Election Commission Secretariat Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam were special guests.

Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Masudur Rahman Bhuya, Range DIG Moinul Haque, Deputy Commissioner Khandkar Yasir Arefin along with Executive Magistrate, election related officers and senior law enforcement officers participated in the meeting under the chairmanship of Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Zillur Rahman Chowdhury.
