Dhaka, October 19: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the Home Minister to take "stand action" against those involved in the recent arson and attacks on minorities. Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam made the remarks in response to a question from reporters after a cabinet meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday (October 19).

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting by joining from Ganobhaban through video conference. Cabinet ministers and state ministers from the Secretariat side took part in the meeting.

Asked if there were any shortcomings in the district-upazila administration working under the cabinet division, the cabinet secretary said, "It has been made clear in today's cabinet meeting that the home ministry has already been told to go for stand-by action. Those who are involved must be caught. Besides, people have to be patient, they can't react. If anyone insults the Qur'an, the Qur'an does not give them the authority to demolish houses. It's a crime. If someone insults the religion, we can protest, we can demand justice from the government, but resorting to violence is completely unexpected, it is not right. The biggest crime in Islam is fitna (quarrel)."

He said, "Today it has been said, the Home Minister has been instructed, to take stand action. Action will be taken against those who initiated these as soon as possible. At the same time, religious and political figures have been told that if someone does a minor twist, they should not react in this way."

Asked if anything had been said about the closure of Facebook, the cabinet secretary said no.
