Renowned bureaucrat and freedom fighter HT Imam no more

Dhaka, March 4: Hossain Toufique Imam, also known as HT Imam - a renowned bureaucrat, a heroic freedom fighter - became a popular politician after a long career, apart from being an eloquent speaker and writer, has died.

He died at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the capital a little after 1am on Thursday (March 4). President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed deep grief over his demise.

The President said, "HT Imam's role in the great liberation war was very important. He has worked all his life to develop the spirit of independence and the great liberation war."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed grief over the death of friend and advisor HT Imam. Besides, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition, members of the Cabinet and leaders at various levels have expressed their condolences over his death.

HT Imam, despite being a high-ranking government official in East Pakistan, participated in the Great War of Liberation in 1971 and made important contributions to the running of the expatriate Bangladesh government. In March 1971, he was the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Rangamati District. He was the first cabinet secretary of independent Bangladesh.

After the formation of the Awami League government in 2009, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appointed him as a Cabinet Minister and Adviser on Public Administration. In 2014, he was appointed political advisor to the Prime Minister. He has several books on the management of the liberation war in Bangladesh.
