Dhaka, July 3: This July may see less than normal rainfall and higher temperatures across the country. At the same time, short to medium term floods may occur in different parts of the country.

The expert committee formed for long-term forecasting of Bangladesh Meteorological Department has given this forecast. A regular meeting of the committee was held on Sunday at the Meteorological Department's Dhaka Storm Warning Center and through video conference. Director of Directorate and Chairman of Expert Committee Md. Azizur Rahman presided over it.

The chairman said that in the month of July, there is a possibility of less rainfall in the country as a whole. One to two depressions may develop over the Bay of Bengal, one of which may develop into a monsoon depression. Moderate thunderstorms with lightning may occur in the north, north-west and central parts of the country for one to two days. Also light thunder storm with lightning may occur for 3 to 5 days across the country.

Azizur Rahman also said that mild (36 to 38 degrees Celsius) heat waves may occur in the country during this month and the day and night temperatures may be slightly higher than normal.

Quoting the Flood Forecasting Center, he said that due to monsoonal heavy rains in July, short to medium term flooding may occur in the northern, northeastern, northwestern, north-central and central parts of the country. On the other hand, short-term flash floods may occur in some parts of the south-eastern hilly basin.

The Meteorological Department highlighted the observation of June and said in the long-term forecast that the rainfall was 16 percent less than normal across the country in June. However, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions recorded above normal rainfall and Dhaka division recorded normal rainfall.

Meanwhile, waterlogging has occurred in most areas of Sylhet city due to continuous rain. In the early hours of Sunday, several hours of continuous heavy rain caused waterlogging in several areas of the lower part of the city. Water overflows the roads and enters people's homes and businesses. This is causing great suffering to the city dwellers.
