Roads are sinking in Sylhet region, low-lying areas are being flooded

Dhaka, 2nd July 2023 : Due to the continuous rains of the last three days and the upstream flow, the water of all the rivers, including Surma, Kushiara, Jadukata in Sunamganj, has increased increasing significantly.

As a result, several upazilas including Tahirpur, Chatak, Doara Bazar, Madhyanagar in Sylhet region are getting flooded. And the roads are sinking. More than 500,000 people in the lower areas are suffering.

Meanwhile, as the Durgapur road of Sunamganj's Biswambharpur upazila was submerged by the mountain torrent on Saturday morning, the direct road connection between Sunamganj city and Tahirpur upazila was cut off. More than lakhs of people suffer from it. Even more than 20 lakh people of Bhati are under the threat of floods due to continued rainfall and landslides.

Locals say that they are in a state of panic due to the rising water level. Mamun Howladar, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, said that due to continuous rainfall and upstream hill slopes, the water of all rivers including Surma, Jadukata, Kushiara in Sunamganj is flowing 28 cm below the water level. There is a risk of short-term flooding in Sunamganj.

Meanwhile, two farmers were killed by lightning in Kushtia. Another person was injured. The incident took place in Krishnapur village of Sadar upazila on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased are Zahoor Ali (50) and Chalim Uddin (37). Zahoor Ali is the son of Karim Saudagar of that village and Chalim Uddin is the son of Mahir Uddin of the same area.

Kushtia Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sadhan Kumar Biswas said that thunder started raining in the afternoon. After leaving work, he took shelter under a tin shed next to the market. Three people were injured in the lightning strike. When they were rescued and taken to the hospital, the doctor declared him dead.

Kushtia General Hospital resident medical officer Dr. Tapas Kumar Sarkar said that they died before being brought to the hospital. Injured Rezaul is currently out of danger. He is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
