Rohingya camp fire: 1 child killed, 300 settlements burnt to ashes

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 9: Two Rohingya camps in Kutupalong area of Ukhia upazila in Cox's Bazar caught fire on Tuesday (March 8) afternoon.

Cox's Bazar Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commission's Additional Commissioner Samsuddauja Nayan said the fire was brought under control at around 5.45 pm.

He said about 300 settlements and shops had been burnt to ashes in the blaze. In addition, one child died in the fire. Four units of the fire service worked to douse the blaze.

According to local Rohingyas, a fire broke out at Rohingya Camp No. 5 in Kutupalong at around 3.40 pm. At the moment it spread to the neighbouring camp no. 6. Upon receiving the news, four units of the fire service reached the spot and firemen fought for nearly two hours to bring the blaze under control.

Samsuddauja Nayan, additional commissioner at the Cox's Bazar Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commission office, said the exact cause of the fire is not yet known. The fire is estimated to have burned about 300 Rohingya settlements and shops. One child died in the fire. However, his detailed identity has not been established yet.
