Rohingyas have to go back to their own country: PM to Chinese ambassador

Dhaka, December 9: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the Rohingyas have to go back to their own country. Hasina said this when outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Ziming paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister at her official residence Ganabhaban on Thursday.

Sheikh Hasina said, "Myanmar is the country of the Rohingyas and they are the residents of that country. But they have now become a huge burden for us due to various reasons including food security. We sheltered them on humanitarian grounds. Now they have to go back to their own country."

The Prime Minister expressed hope that Myanmar will take back its citizens to their country. The Chinese ambassador expressed hope in the meeting that Rohingya repatriation could start next year. He said, "The Rohingyas will start going to their country next year."

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary KM Shakhawat Moon briefed the journalists. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed satisfaction with the progress of several mega projects in Bangladesh funded by China. She thanked China for investing in the Bangabandhu Tunnel on the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong.

She said Bangladesh has always believed in maintaining humanity, friendly relations, and peace. As a result, Bangladesh always wants to maintain friendly relations with neighbouring countries.

The Prime Minister congratulated the outgoing Ambassador of China on completing his tenure and wished him success in his next duties. She thanked outgoing Chinese Ambassador Li Jimping for playing a role in taking Bangladesh-China bilateral relations to a higher level.

The Chinese ambassador highly praised Sheikh Hasina's strong leadership for the socio-economic progress of Bangladesh. He said to the Prime Minister, this development has been possible only because of you.

The Prime Minister thanked the Chinese President and Prime Minister for their continued support for the development of Bangladesh.
