Dhaka, Sept 14: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that Rooppur nuclear power plant with a capacity of 2,400 MW under construction in Pabna will be commissioned by 2025.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina shared this information in response to a question in the National Parliament session on Wednesday. Earlier, the Parliament session started at 4 pm under the chairmanship of Speaker Shirin Sharmin.

The Prime Minister said that currently the power generation capacity in the country is 28,134 megawatts. 30 power plants with a capacity of 11,609 MW are under construction. These will be phased in between 2023-2026. The contract for the construction of 17 power plants with a capacity of 2,429 MW is awaiting signing. Rooppur nuclear power plant with a capacity of 2,400 MW is under construction. It is expected to be operational by 2025.

She said that the present government has been ensuring uninterrupted energy supply in the country for about 15 years. After coming to power in 2009, energy diversification i.e. gas/LNG, coal, electricity import, liquid fuel, nuclear and renewable energy based power generation plan was taken to increase power generation capacity and provide uninterrupted power across the country. As a result of timely implementation of these plans, power generation capacity has increased more than five times from 4,942 MW to 28,134 MW today (including captive, off-grid renewables and fossil fuels). This includes import of 2,656 MW electricity from India.

Sheikh Hasina said that there is a power generation plan till 2030 taking into consideration the future power demand. This includes a total of 14,666 MW of power plants under construction and under tender process. These plans are being implemented in phases.
