Russia sends emergency cooling tank to Rooppur nuclear power plant

Dhaka, December 21:JSC ZiO Podolsk has sent a set of Reactor Core Emergency Cooling (ECCS) tank from Russia for the Rooppur nuclear power plant.

It has already been sent to Bangladesh for the second unit of the Rooppur nuclear power plant, according to a press release from Rosatom. JSC ZiO Podolsk is an organization in the mechanical engineering branch of the Russian company Rosatom.

Each reactor plant has an Emergency Cooling (ECCS) tank for each coolant loop, the press release said. These ECCs are designed to supply boric acid automatically during coolant loss of the reactor core and can also be used during emergency primary circuit depressurization. This set weighs 156 tons and has a lifespan of 60 years.

The tanks were first brought by rail to the seaport of St. Petersburg. From there they were shipped to Bangladesh by sea.

The design and implementation of the Rooppur nuclear power plant is in accordance with the Russian design. The two power units at the plant will have VVER three plus reactors and each will generate 1,200 MW of electricity.
