Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 15: The Bangladesh government will appoint lawyers in the United States in an effort to lift the US sanctions on RAB as well as the former and current officers of this force. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has started the process in this regard.

The ministry made the announcement at a meeting of the standing committee on foreign affairs on Monday (February 14). The meeting discussed issues related to the appointments of PR firms, lobbyists and lawyers.

Committee members -- Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, State Minister Shahriar Alam, Nurul Islam Nahid, Md. Abdul Majid Khan, Md. Habibe Millat and Nahim Razzak -- took part in the meeting which was presided over by the committee's president Farooq Khan. According to reports, Bangladesh Embassy in the United States is working seriously on the issue.

After the meeting, the chairman of the committee, Muhammad Farooq Khan, said, "We have discussed the sanctions imposed by the United States. We said, why didn't our embassy there know in advance? They explained like them. The gap was created due to the Covid-19 pandemic."

The ministry also said in a working paper on the US-Bangladesh challenge that the US appears to be putting pressure on Bangladesh on labour laws, digital security laws and human rights. Although Bangladesh took several steps after the US abolished the GSP facility, the United States did not re-introduce that facility for Bangladesh.

It further said that in the last 20 years, there has been no bilateral visit between Bangladesh and the United States at the level of President / Prime Minister. However, strong diplomatic efforts are being made to organize a high-level visit to mark the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-US relations this year.
