Schedule to be announced very soon: CEC

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 10 November 2023: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said, "We have an obligation to hold elections at a specific time. Accordingly, the schedule will be announced very soon." He said this after a meeting with President Md Sahabuddin at Bangabhaban on Thursday (November 9).

Chief Election Commissioner along with four Election Commissioners went to Bangabhaban at 11:52 PM to meet the President. Commission Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam was also with them.

According to the constitution, there is an obligation to hold parliamentary elections within 90 days of the expiry of the five-year term of parliament. The term of the current Parliament will end on January 29, 2024. In this case the 90 days count will start from November 1, 2023. The Election Commission said that it is preparing to announce the national election schedule in mid-November and conduct the election in January.

The Election Commission has finalized the constituency-wise voter list for the National Assembly elections. The total number of voters is 11 crore 96 lakh 91 thousand 633. Among the total voters, women are 5 crore 89 lakh 19 thousand 202, male voters are 6 crore 7 lakh 71 thousand 579 and third gender voters are 852.

The number of voters increased by 5 lakh 40 thousand 193 people due to the inclusion of young people in the run-up to the parliamentary elections. EC has finalized the 300 constituency wise voter list for the 12th National Assembly Elections by District Election Officers. According to this list, the parliamentary elections will be held.

According to the EC, it is a long-standing practice to meet the President before announcing the schedule of national elections. The schedule will be announced soon. The schedule is likely to be announced on November 14 or 15, EC said. The election will be held in the last week of December or the first week of January. In the meantime, the EC held a meeting with Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan on November 1.
