School students will be vaccinated against Coronavirus soon: Health Minister

Dhaka, October 11: Doses of Pfizer and Moderna coronavirus vaccines will be given to school-college students soon. Health Minister Zahid Maleque made the remarks at a press conference on the Covid-19 vaccine and contemporary issues at the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons in Mohakhali on Sunday (October 10).

The health minister said, "I visited Geneva four days ago. I talked to the head of the World Health Organization about vaccinating students. They have approved Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for school-college students (12 to 17 years old) to prevent [coronavirus] infection."

"We now have 60 lakh dose of the Pfizer vaccines in stock," he said. "Sixty lakh vaccines will be given to 30 lakh students. Another 70 lakh vaccines will come this month. Then there will be no shortage in the vaccination activities of the students."

The Health Minister said it would be possible to vaccinate eight crore people in the country between December and January. "We have received seven crore 22 lakh vaccines so far. Of these, three crore 61 lakh people have been vaccinated with the first dose and one crore 79 lakh people have been vaccinated with the second dose. Now there are one crore 81 lakh dose of vaccine in stock. Another five crore 20 lakh people have registered in the Surokkha app."

Zahid Maleque said that Bangladesh will get another 3.5 crore vaccines this year. "We will be able to bring 12 crore people under vaccination by next March. This population is 80 percent of the country. Even though that Coronavirus is under control, everyone still has to follow the hygiene rules."
