Dhaka, September 20: The court sentenced seven members of the Cox's Bazar District Detective Police (DB) to 12 years imprisonment under separate clauses in the case of extortion of Tk 17 lakh ransom from a business hostage. Judge Mohammad Ismail of Cox's Bazar District Sessions and Judges Court gave the verdict on Tuesday (September 20).

Even if they are sentenced to five years in one section and seven years in another section, both the sentences will run together and they will have to serve seven years in prison. At the same time, the court sentenced each of them to one more year of imprisonment without paying a fine of one lakh taka.

Advocate Mohammad Jahangir, the lawyer of the plaintiff in the case, said that the court gave this verdict as the complaint was proved. The court sentenced five years in section 365 and seven years in section 386. Both sentences are to be served concurrently. As a result, the sentence will be considered to be seven years. The accused were present when the verdict was pronounced.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Faridul Alam said that on October 24, 2017, individuals in plain clothes in the identity of DB Police took Teknaf businessman Abdul Ghafoor in a microbus from the road behind Cox's Bazar police station. Then, fearing 'crossfire', he demanded a ransom of one crore rupees from his relatives. At one stage, the family agreed to pay 17 lakhs. After receiving the money, Abdul Ghafoor was released at Shamlapur on the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive road the next morning. Gafur's relatives told the officer of the army security post on the road. This security post of the army was established for the security and relief operations of the Rohingyas.

The members of the DB police who collected the ransom got Tk 17 lakh when the soldiers of the post searched the microbus on their way back via Marine Drive road. At that time, DB Sub-Inspector (SI) Moniruzzaman ran away, but the remaining six were arrested by army personnel.
