Several Awami League candidates victorious in municipality elections

Dhaka, December 29: The first round of voting in the municipal elections has been completed. Overall, there is no one close to the ruling Awami League in this election. Out of 24 municipalities, Awami League has won 17 mayoral posts, independents have won three and BNP has won two.

The Awami League candidates who have won the mayoral post are ABM Golam Kabir in Barguna's Betagi municipality; Saiful Islam Saif in Netrokona Madan; Jahangir Alam Malik Khokon in Chuadanga; Md. Ramzan Ali in Manikganj; Kaziul Islam in Kurigram; SM Iqbal Hossain Sumon at Gafargaon in Mymensingh; Abul Imam Md. Kamran Chowdhury in Baralekha of Moulvibazar; Tariqul Islam in Kushtia; Zakia Khatun in Panchagarh; Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury Tutul in Badarganj, Rangpur; Lokman Hossain Dakua in Bakerganj, Barisal; Gias Uddin in Wazirpur; Monir Akhter Khan Taru Lodi at Shahjadpur in Sirajganj; Biswajit in Dirai of Sunamganj; Abbas Ali in Katakhali Municipality of Rajshahi; Advocate Sakhawat Hossain Sakho at Chatmohar in Pabna; And Badiul Alam in Sitakunda, Chittagong.

They have won as independent candidates - Md. Anwar Hawlader in Kuakata municipality, Awami League rebel independent candidate Ekramul Haque in Thakurgaon and BNP rebel candidate Md. Mahmud Alam Liton in Dinajpur.

Those who have won the mayoral post as BNP candidates are Farid Ahmed in Shayestaganj of Habiganj and Al Mamun in Puthia of Rajshahi.

Besides, Awami League candidate Golam Kabir is leading in Dhamrai, Dhaka, but the results will be announced on Tuesday (December 29), the returning officer said.

Electronic voting machines (EVMs) began voting in 24 municipalities at 8am on Monday (December 28). Voting continued till 4 pm.
