Shamsul Haque's sentence reduced to 10 years imprisonment for crimes against humanity

Dhaka, Nov 15: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has announced a verdict reducing the sentence of Shamsul Haque (Badar Bhai) of Jamalpur, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the case of murder, genocide and other crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War.

After the final hearing of the appeal seeking the acquittal of Shamsul Haque, the Appellate Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan announced the verdict on Tuesday. Earlier, November 7 was scheduled to announce the verdict in this regard. Later, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court decided to postpone the date of the judgment on November 14.

After the final hearing of the appeal on October 18, the same bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan fixed the date for the verdict. The hearing on his appeal began on July 12. The hearing ended with that.

On October 26, 2015, the trial of the eight people of Jamalpur started in the tribunal after the complaint was filed. In this case, the International Criminal Tribunal gave a verdict on July 18, 2016. The verdict awarded death sentence to three accused and life imprisonment to five accused. The accused were charged with five counts of crimes against humanity of murder, genocide, detention, kidnapping, torture, looting and disappearance of corpses.

On July 18, 2016, the International Criminal Tribunal ruled in this case. In the verdict, out of eight accused, three accused were sentenced to death and five accused were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Five charges of crimes against humanity such as murder, abduction, detention, torture, looting, disappearance were brought against them during the liberation war in 1971. The tribunal mentioned in the verdict that three of the allegations were proved.

The accused who received the death sentence are Ashraf Hossain, Abdul Mannan and Abdul Bari, the founders of the Jamalpur Albadar Army. Former director of Islami Bank Sharif Ahmed alias Sharif Hossain, Harun, Abul Hashem, Md. Shamsul Haque alias Badr Bhai and SM Yusuf Ali were sentenced to life imprisonment.
