Dhaka, 26 March 2023 : President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their respects to the martyrs of the Liberation War by laying wreaths at Savar National Memorial this morning on the occasion of 53rd Independence and National Day.

The President first and then the Prime Minister laid a wreath at the memorial altar.

After placing the wreath, the President and the Prime Minister stood in silence for a while, paying deep respect to the memory of the brave martyrs of the Great Liberation War of 1971. A smart contingent of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force gave the national salute and a mournful tune was played by the bugle.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina along with her party leaders paid deep respect to the martyrs of the Liberation War by laying another wreath at the National Memorial on behalf of the party. The Head of State and Head of Government also signed the visitor's book kept in the memorial premises. At this time, the Speaker of the National Parliament. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui, members of the Cabinet, senior leaders of Awami League, leaders of the 14-party Awami League-led party and high-ranking civil and military officials were present. Later, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chief Justice paid tribute to the martyrs by placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum.

The country is celebrating its 53rd Independence Day today. Every year, March 26 brings history's saddest memories of the black night of March 25, the night in 1971 that began a nine-month bloody ordeal.

In the wake of military repression, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced the historic independence of Bangladesh on March 26, 1971 (the night after March 25) from his residence at No. 32 in Dhanmondi through the then EPR (East Pakistan Rifles) wireless. Bangladesh was born as an independent state on December 16, 1971, freed from the hands of the Pakistani occupying forces after a sea of blood was exchanged in the bloody nine-month war of independence. Today this day is very glorious and precious to the Bengali nation.
