Dhaka, January 22: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending the gift of Covid-19 vaccine during the crisis. She expressed her gratitude while inaugurating the centenary celebrations of Dhaka University on Thursday evening.

As a gift from the Government of India, two million (20 lakh) doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine- Covishield- arrived in Bangladesh on Thursday afternoon.

Vikram Doraiswami, the Indian High Commissioner, said it was the largest consignment of vaccines given as a gift to a neighboring country.

The Prime Minister said, "The coronavirus vaccine, which we received as a gift from India, has already arrived. I thank the Prime Minister of India for this.”

The Bangladesh government is buying 30 million (three crore) doses of this vaccine made at the Serum Institute of India. The first shipment is due next week.

Sheikh Hasina said, "What we bought with money will arrive on the 25th or 26th of January. We have a plan for how the vaccine will be given.”

She said the government has taken all possible steps to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Sheikh Hasina also expressed regret over not being able to take part in the anniversary celebrations of her university.

"The world is stagnant today because of the coronavirus. I am also in quarantine. Sometimes I feel like I was in a small prison when I was arrested in 2008, now I feel like I'm in a big prison. Our university is celebrating its centenary today. I couldn't be there. It's really hard for me, it's sad. I'm constatntly thinking about the university, but there's no way."
