Sirajganj-6 MP Hasibur Rahman Swapan dies of Covid-19

Dhaka, September 2: Hasibur Rahman Swapan, Member of Parliament for Sirajganj-6 (Shahjadpur) constituency and former Deputy Minister for Industries, died of coronavirus. He died at a hospital in Turkey around 3:15 am on Thursday (September 2), Bangladesh time. He was 6 years old. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and numerous admirers.

His death has cast a shadow of mourning over Shahjadpur and Sirajganj. The party leaders and workers broke down in tears. Mourning is prevailing among people of all walks of life.

Shahjadpur Upazila Juba League convener and MP's personal assistant Ashiqul Haque Dinar said his body would be brought to Bangladesh on Friday (September 3rd). He will be buried at his constituency in Shahjadpur after Janaza.

He said MP Swapan had a kidney transplant at a hospital in Turkey in February this year. He returned to the country after successful surgery. In this condition, he tested positive for coronavirus on July 25. When the situation deteriorated, he was sent back to Turkey on August 29. He died this morning while undergoing treatment there.

Hasibur Rahman Swapan led the transport workers' organization in the eighties. In 1996, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from the then Sirajganj-6 constituency as a BNP candidate in the Seventh Parliamentary Election. Later, when the ruling Awami League called for the formation of a consensus government, he joined it and became the Deputy Minister of Industries. When the BNP expelled him from the party at that time, he joined the Awami League.

Then in the tenth parliamentary elections of 2014 and the eleventh parliamentary elections of 2016, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Sirajganj-6 constituency as Bangladesh Awami League. Besides, he was the president of Upazila Awami League till his death.
