Sixth farmers' market inaugurated in Dhaka South City

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Nov 19: Dhaka South City Corporation's (DSCC) 'Sixth Farmers' Market' was inaugurated in Hazaribagh Jhauchar area on Friday (November 18) morning.

This market was launched under the area-based farmers' market program to meet the needs of the city dwellers for safe food. 10 safe farmers selected by the Directorate of Agricultural Extension from Hazratpur, Keraniganj, Dhaka will sell their vegetables and fruits directly to consumers in this market.

The market has been launched in a joint initiative of Dhaka South City Corporation, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Directorate of Agricultural Extension and Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust with the support of the Netherlands Government. DSCC Ward 55 Councilor Md. Noore Alam Chowdhury inaugurated the farmers' market.

Councilor Noore Alam Chowdhury said, considering the health welfare of the people, the importance of the farmer's market is immense. If we do not cooperate, the farmers will face various challenges and there will be obstacles in managing the market successfully. All assistance will be provided from the office of the Councilor in the management and supervision of the market.

Senior Technical Advisor of the Dhaka Food System Project of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Javier Boan said, "We are trying to reduce the distance between farmers and consumers through the farmers' market activities. We are also trying to reduce the distance between rural and urban areas. The farmers market will provide safe food to the local people on the one hand, and on the other hand the farmer will be assured of the right price of his produce.
