Dhaka, April 28: Noting that only five per cent of Bangladesh's total debt has been borrowed from China, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said, "Some miscreants are exaggerating Bangladesh's relations with China. Their aim is to prove that Bangladesh is dependent on China; So the United States is dissatisfied."

He told reporters after a program in Sylhet on Wednesday. Mentioning that Bangladesh is very calculating in borrowing, Momen said, "Bangladesh borrows the least in the world. We are only 15-16 percent of GDP dependent on debt."

"Five per cent of Chinese loans are taken," he said. "As a country, most loans have been taken from Japan. In addition, more loans are taken from the World Bank, IMF, ADB."

Regarding the bankruptcy of Sri Lanka and the comparison of Bangladesh with it, the Foreign Minister said, "Sri Lanka and Bangladesh cannot be compared on the same scale. Some wicked people are spreading this propaganda. Sri Lanka was a country dependent only on tourism. They are not even close to our export earnings and remittances. We have more capacity than them."

"My country has exported USD 45 billion this year," he said. "We received USD 25 billion in remittances during coronavirus pandemic. We are a self-sufficient country in food. It is not right to compare us with them."

Citing Indian media, the foreign minister said, "We have learned that Indian foreign minister Jayashankar is coming to invite our prime minister. During the visit, foreign ministers of the two countries will discuss issues related to Teesta, Kushiyara river water, future cooperation, trade, connectivity, border management and other issues.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen attended the distribution of Eid items at the initiative of Samakal and Al Khair Foundation. At the Hafiz Complex in Dhopadighirpar of the city, Eid gifts were handed over to 300 helpless and distressed people under the slogan 'Happy Eid for all'.

Speaking on the occasion, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said, "I have seen leaders of different countries of the world, but I have never seen such a compassionate leader as the Prime Minister of our country. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has not missed any meeting till date. He has been present in all the meetings. Earlier I heard that those who were the head of the government were often absent from the meeting. He has always worked tirelessly for the development of the country. Bangladesh is moving forward with his relentless efforts."
