Dhaka: On the occasion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's speech in Bengali at the United Nations, the Postal Department is issuing a commemorative stamp worth Tk 10, an opening envelope worth Tk 10, a data card worth Tk 5 and a special seal.

On Friday (September 25), Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar released a commemorative stamp from his office and issued a datacard and a special seal. This information has been given in a press release sent from the ministry.

September 25, 1974 is an unforgettable day for Bangladesh and Bengali language. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his first address as the Head of State of Bangladesh at the 29th General Assembly of the United Nations. Just 7 days before that, Bangladesh was unanimously included in the General Assembly on 16 September 1974 as the 137th country of the United Nations.

Bangabandhu was the first statesman to address the United Nations in his mother tongue Bengali and to elevate the Bengali language to a position of dignity in the world assembly. On that day, the president of the general session requested Bangabandhu to speak in English. Bangabandhu said politely, "Honorable President, I want to speak in my mother tongue Bengali."

There are six official languages of the United Nations, none of which are Bengali. At Bangabandhu's request, the president of the session allowed him to speak in Bengali. Friday was that historic September 25th. A glorious day in the history of Bengali nation and Bengali language.

Commemorative stamps and inaugural envelopes will later be sold from all post offices in the country including Dhaka GPO's Philatelic Bureau and other GPOs and main post offices. Special seals have been arranged in four GPOs for use in the opening envelope.
