Teesta Agreement to be signed soon: Hasina expresses hope after meeting Modi

New Delhi: Terming the Bangladesh-India bilateral relationship as a role model of neighborly diplomacy, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed hope that all outstanding issues, including the Teesta water sharing agreement, would be resolved soon, like many other issues resolved in the spirit of friendship and cooperation.

She said, "I reiterate that India is the most important and closest neighbor of Bangladesh. Bangladesh-India bilateral relations are known as a role model of neighborly diplomacy."

The Prime Minister said this in a joint statement issued after witnessing the bilateral talks with the Prime Minister of India at Hyderabad House on Tuesday and the exchange of seven MoUs signed between the concerned authorities of the two countries.

She said that both countries have achieved significant progress in several fields in the last decade.

She also said, "The two countries have resolved many outstanding issues in the spirit of friendship and cooperation and we hope to resolve all outstanding issues including the early signing of the Teesta Water Sharing Agreement."

Referring to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries on the water distribution of the Kushiara river, the Prime Minister said that all problems like the water distribution of 54 identical rivers, including the Teesta water distribution agreement, will be resolved.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his statement praised the economic growth of Bangladesh. He expressed hope that Bangladesh and India will work closely in the coming days for the benefit of both countries.

He said Bangladesh has made extraordinary development under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The two countries will work together for the benefit of the people of the two close neighbours.

Modi said India, as the largest trade and development partner, will work to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

The Prime Minister of India said that during the official talks, he discussed in detail various bilateral, regional and multilateral issues ranging from water resource management and connectivity to security with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He also said, "Today Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and I have discussed a lot in all bilateral fields and various issues."

He said, there was also a discussion on flood mitigation initiatives in South Assam of India and the Sylhet region of Bangladesh. Referring to the fight against terrorism and extremism, he said that both countries will work together to fight all kinds of terrorism and extremism in the spirit of 1971.
