Temperature drops as heavy rains lash Dhaka

Dhaka, May 25: Eventually it rained in Dhaka under the influence of cyclone Yaas. This rain has given relief from the heat. It started raining in different parts of the capital around 9:15 pm on Monday (May 24) and continued till 11 pm. However, even though it rained at night in Dhaka, the southern and southeastern parts of the country had been receiving rainfall much earlier.

Meteorologist Md. Aftab Uddin said, ‘Most parts in the country, including Dhaka, are experiencing rains triggered by the cyclone. It is a 'peripheral wind'. When a large system is at sea, there are thunder-clouds around. That is, the effect of the cyclone is thunder-storm. Thunderstorms, rains are being witnessed across the the southern part of the country. However, it is not happening in Rangpur and Rajshahi division."

The latest special notification from the Meteorological Department on Yaas said that the cyclone which was located in the East-Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas, has moved northwest and is currently in the same area. It was located 575 km south-southwest of Chittagong seaport, 590 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport, 350 km south of Mongla seaport and 585 km south of Payra seaport at 6 pm on Monday (May 24).

Due to favorable weather conditions, the cyclone may intensify and move north-northwest and reach the north-west Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 26, passing along the north Orissa-West Bengal-Khulna coast.

The maximum sustained wind speed within 54 km of the cyclone center is 62 km per hour, which is increasing up to 88 km in the form of gusts or gusty winds. The sea is rough near the center of the cyclone.

Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to display remote warning signal number 2. All fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay and the deep sea have been asked to remain in safe shelter until further notice.
