Dhaka, January 4: One to two cold spells are expected this January. One of them can take the form of an intense (4 to 6 degrees Celsius) cold. The Meteorological Department said in a long-term January forecast on Sunday (January 3).

Meteorologist Md. Abdur Rahman Khan said, "These two cold spells will happen after January 12. The temperature will rise till January 12. That means winter will not fall that way. The temperature that is there now at night will rise further. It will not be severely cold, people will feel hot in some places. The temperature will start to decrease after the 12th. There could be a severe cold wave at any time after the second week."

The long-term forecast for January further states that the country as a whole is likely to receive less than normal rainfall this month. Moderate or dense fog may fall in the north, northeast, northwest and central parts of the country and in river basins and light to moderate fog elsewhere. Dense fog conditions can sometimes continue until noon.

Throughout January, all major rivers in the country may have normal water flow. The sun can provide an average of 5 to 6 and a half hours of light, the forecast said.
