Own Correspondent, Dhaka, August 22: Jahangir Alam, who was temporarily suspended from the post of mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, has filed a writ in the High Court to get his post back.

The writ has challenged the legal validity of his suspension. Barrister Moshiur Rahman Sabuj filed this writ on behalf of Jahangir Alam last week.

The writ petition was heard in the High Court bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md. Aktaruzzaman last Wednesday. Barrister Rokan Uddin Mahmud heard on behalf of the writ in the court. Barrister Mohammad Belayet Hossain was with him. On Sunday (August 21), the concerned bench informed about this.

Barrister Belayet Hossain, the lawyer associated with the writ, said that the legal validity of the suspension of Jahangir Alam has been challenged in the writ. The court fixed next Tuesday (August 23) as the date of order.

On November 25 of last year, Jahangir Alam was first expelled from the Awami League for making fun of the martyrs of the liberation war. After that, he was temporarily suspended from the post of Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation.

On that day, local government minister Md. Tajul Islam said in his office that several complaints have been received against Mayor Jahangir Alam. If a complaint is received against an elected public representative and the complaint is taken into account for investigation or disposal, there is a rule of suspension under the law. Jahangir Alam has been suspended for that reason.

The minister said that there are various allegations against Jahangir, including illegally occupying land, working against the interests of the people, and forcing the owner of the land to build infrastructure without compensation.
