Dhaka, June 12: RAB-4 has arrested a top leader of the banned militant group Ansar Al Islam in Habiganj from Bijoynagar area of Brahmanbaria. The name of the accused is Mufti Md. Jasim Uddin Tanvir (28). He was in hiding for a long time as several active members of his party were arrested.

On Friday (June 11) afternoon, RAB-4 Senior Assistant Director (Media Officer) Senior ASP Mohammad Sajedul Islam Sajal said that on September 17 last year, a member of RAB-4 Ansar Al Islam testified in court under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code with the help of information technology. He was arrested during a raid in Ghanshyampur Darul Uloom Madrasa area of ​​Ghanshyampur village under Bijoynagar police station in Brahmanbaria on Friday night.

Citing preliminary interrogation, Mohammad Sajedul Islam Sajal said the arrested Mufti Md. Jasim Uddin Tanvir, had confessed to being a top member of the banned organisation Ansar Al Islam in Habiganj district. After graduating from a local madrasa, he secretly worked as a teacher in a private madrasa in Brahmanbaria from Habiganj. He has been using social media and apps as a platform to incite extremism.

The interrogation also revealed that Jasim Uddin Tanvir, as a top active member of Ansar al-Islam, used to communicate regularly with other members as well as promote various extremist writings and videos online, raise funds and contact members offline.

Evidence of various extremist conversations and propaganda has been seized from his mobile phone. He went into hiding for a long time after several active members of his party (Ansar al-Islam) were arrested.

During the arrest, 1 laptop, 3 mobile phones and 2 extremist books and some leaflets used in extremist activities were seized from him. Apart from taking legal action against the arrested Mufti Md. Jasim Uddin Tanvir, the RAB is also keeping a close watch on the arrest of other accomplices, the official said.
