Testimony in Tarique-Zubaida case is over, verdict just a step away

Dhaka, July 25: Testimony against BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case for acquiring wealth beyond known income has ended. 43 out of 56 witnesses testified in this case.

ACC Deputy Director Toufiqul Islam testified in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Asaduzzaman on Monday. As his testimony is over, the court fixed July 27 as the day to present the arguments of the case. According to the law, after the presentation of the arguments, the day will be fixed for the pronouncement of the verdict.

According to the details of the case, a case was registered against Tarique and Zubaida on September 26, 2007 at the capital's Kafrul police station. The case was filed by ACC Deputy Director Zahirul Huda. They were accused of owning Tk 4 crore 81 lakh 53 thousand 561 beyond the declared income and concealing the information of assets and acquiring assets beyond known income. In addition, Tarique Rahman's mother-in-law Iqbal Mand Banu was accused in the case.

Then in 2008, ACC Deputy Director Taufiqul Islam filed a charge sheet against three people. Iqbal Mand Banu was acquitted in this case.

Earlier, on November 1, 2022, the court issued an arrest warrant against Tarique Rahman and Zubaida Rahman after taking into account the charge sheet. They are currently absconding. On April 13, 2023, the court ordered the trial to be started against Tarique-Zubaida.
