The village court's power to impose fines is quadrupled
Dhaka, February 11, 2024: The government is going to increase the power of the village court to impose fines from Tk 75,000 to Tk 3 lakh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister's office on Sunday (February 11) and approved the draft of the Village Court Amendment Act.
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain said in a briefing at the Secretariat that last year the draft law was approved in principle and final. But as it is not presented in the Parliament and the new Cabinet is formed, there is an obligation to seek approval from the new Cabinet. The Cabinet has given its final approval.
The cabinet secretary said, the financial power (power to impose fine) of the village court is being increased from 75 thousand to 3 lakh taka. The cabinet secretary said that the village court consists of five people including the chairman, if one person is absent at any time, the number of members of the court becomes four. In such a situation the person who was absent will be given seven days to appear.
If he is not present, then the voting hall has the power of the chairman.
He said that if one of the parties to the case dies, the future of the case becomes complicated. Now it is said that if a party dies before the judgment, his inheritance can be set aside.
