Own Correspondent, Dhaka, August 3: Alleging that BNP is continuously spreading misinformation and lies about electricity and energy, Awami League General Secretary and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader said that BNP leaders want to forget their past easily but the people remember it. "During their regime, there was 13-14 hours of load-shedding every day and the country was plunged in darkness.

Obaidul Quader said these things in a statement given to the media on Tuesday (August 2).

The Bridge Minister said that they (BNP) handed over the valuable mineral resources of the country to foreign masters to come to power. It cheated the nation by installing poles only in the name of electricity supply. BNP kept the entire country in darkness while keeping the alternative power center Hawa Bhavan and Khwab Bhavan illuminated.

He also said that leaving behind those dark times, Sheikh Hasina has given the people of Bangladesh a bright Bangladesh. Along with achieving self-sufficiency in electricity, she has kept a record of unprecedented success in all socio-economic fields.

Pointing out that Sheikh Hasina's government has shown success in the power and energy sector, Obaidul Quader said that when the Awami League came to power with a landslide victory in the elections held in December 2008, the per capita power generation in the country was 220 kilowatts, which currently stands at 560 kilowatts.

"At the beginning of 2009, only 47 percent of the total population was covered by electricity facilities in the country. Awami League under the leadership of Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina has been in power for a hundred percent of the country's people have come under electricity facilities."

Obaidul Quader pointed out that those who talk about corruption in the power sector are actually the patrons of corruption. He said that it would not have been possible to increase the power generation to 25,566 MW if the present government did not have sound policies and efficient management.

The bridge minister said that at the beginning of 2009, electricity production was 3,267 megawatts. At present, the power supply capacity has increased to 25,566 MW. Not only that, at the beginning of 2009, the number of electricity consumers in the country was 1 crore 8 lakh. By April 2022, the number of subscribers has reached 4 crore 27 lakh.
