Own Correspondent, Dhaka, August 26: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Benazir Ahmed commented that the 28 percent of people who did not vote for Bangabandhu in the 1970 elections are now above 35 percent.

He said, "They are the people who were with the then Pakistani ruling group."

He said this while speaking as a special guest at a discussion meeting organized on '47th Martyrdom Anniversary and National Mourning Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman' at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital on Thursday (August 25) night.

The IGP said that they had accumulated economic power for 24 years due to being with the then Pakistani ruling group. This economic power has been used to avenge their defeat. We must be wary of those Bengalis. But at the end of the day, I believe, inspired by the spirit of Bangabandhu, we can build the golden Bengal of the future.

He said, "Those who are Bengali in appearance killed Bangabandhu brutally and cruelly and have created the original sin of the Bengali nation. As a result of this, the Bengali nation will have to bear this grief for as many thousands of years as this nation will be in existence."

He said when Bangabandhu was returning from London to the country. Then the journalists of that country asked him - there is nothing but destruction where you are going back. In response, Bangabandhu said, 'I have my land and I have my people.' This means he reiterated Bangabandhu's love, trust, and faith towards the country.

"After the war, many economists said that this country will not survive. But their words have been proven false by Bangabandhu's philosophy, his people, 320 million hands of today's 160 million people," Dr. Benazir Ahmed added.

Dr. Benazir said, "As we will be saddened, in the same way, we should be vigilant to move the nation forward in the spirit of Bangabandhu. By staying awake we can build a nation free from hunger, poverty, and self-respect. It is at our doorstep now."
