Thousands of hawkers evicted from 'red zone' in Gulistan

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Sept 12: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mobile court has evicted thousands of hawkers from Gulistan's 'red zone' in the capital.

This operation was carried out to evict shops illegally located on roads and footpaths. On Sunday (September 11), DSCC property officer Md. Muniruzzaman conducted the mobile court from Gulistan's zero point (Nur Hossain Chattar) to Ahad Police Box via Bangabandhu Avenue. The drive was run from 11 am to 3 pm.

At that time, nine persons were fined Tk 70,000 for occupying roads and footpaths and constructing illegal structures. The fine was levied under sub-section 7 and 8 of section 92 of the (City Corporation) Act, 2009.

Regarding the drive, Property Officer Md. Muniruzzaman said that after the launch of the Padma Bridge, the traffic through the Mayor Hanif flyover has increased. Therefore, under the direction of the Mayor, Gulistan Zero Point to Bangabandhu Avenue, Sergeant Ahad Police Box-Bangabhavan, and Mayor Hanif Flyover-Gulistan Chatthar areas have been declared as 'Red Zone' to ensure smooth movement of the public.

He also said that micing has been done continuously for the last three days. We will not allow any hawker to sit here and anyone to build illegal shops or structures. Our campaign will continue.

DSCC Ward No. 13 Councilor Md. Enamul Haque and Ward No. 20 Councilor Farid Uddin Ahmad Ratan were present during the operation.

Earlier on Sunday morning, a committee of five members was formed to mark the roads and footpaths in red, yellow, and green categories. This committee will formulate, implement and manage action plans with the aim of maintaining roads and footpaths, vehicles, and public traffic in coordination with the master plan.
