Three Jamaat-supporter brothers sentenced to death in Awami League leader murder case

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 7: A leader of the Awami League was abducted and killed by his nephews for expressing happiness over the death sentence of war criminal Quader Mollah. A Chittagong court has sentenced three brothers to death and one to life imprisonment for brutally slitting their uncle's throat after abducting him in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar in 2016. The court also ordered a fine of Rs 50,000 and acquittal of another person.

Judge AKM Mozammel Haque Chowdhury of the Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the verdict at noon on Sunday (March 6). The convicts are Abu Bakkar Siddique, son of Nur Mohammad of Badarkhali area of ​​Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar, his brother Yunus Hossain Manik and Ibrahim Mostafa Abu Qayyum. Sohayet, son of Nurul Aziz of the same area, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the case. The court acquitted another accused in the case named Shefayet. Accused Abu Bakkar Siddique was present in the court when the verdict was pronounced but others were absconding.

According to the details of the case, on June 30, 2016, on the day of the verdict of Jamaat leader Quader Mollah in Badarkhali area of Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar district, the news of execution was being telecast on TV. Watching this, Union Awami League president Nurul Huda kept saying, "After the Sheikh Hasina government came to power, all the Razakars are being hanged one by one."

At that time, the pro-Jamaat accused in the tea shop got angry with the words of Nurul Huda. He was later abducted from a tea shop and strangled to death. The victim's son Shahjahan filed a case with the Chakaria Police Station on July 3, 2016. Five people were accused in the case. Chakaria Police Station SI Md. Alamgir filed a chargesheet in the court on November 18, 2016 accusing five people. The court passed the verdict on Sunday after 13 of the 18 witnesses in the case testified.
