Dhaka, November 14: Three members of a family died of electrocution in Dhopadanga of Gaibandha's Sundarganj. The incident took place in South Dhopadanga around 7:30 pm on Friday (November 13). Sundarganj police sub-inspector (SI) Md. Shamsul Islam confirmed the incident.

The deceased were identified as Rekha Begum, 50, wife of Syed Ali of South Dhopadanga village, her son Azaul Haque, 35, and grandson Sujan Mia, 13.

Citing locals, Dhopadanga Union Parishad chairman Advocate Mokhlesur Rahman Raju said Rekha Begum, along with her son and grandson, went to plant paddy saplings on the land next to her house in the evening. After planting, they were walking home through the isle of land. At that time, Rekha Begum and her son and grandson fell ill after getting entangled in a power line lying on a land. People in the area later rescued the bodies.

He added that for a long time, the neighbors had been connecting the rural electricity to the wire hanging on the bamboo poles over the land.

A few days ago, a bamboo pole broke and an electric wire fell on the ground. But as the matter was not known, the death of three members of the same family, including mother and son, took place.

Relatives and locals complained that Palli Bidyut Samiti did not repair the broken poles but the electricity fell on their land.

The matter was reported to the local Palli Bidyut Samiti but no action was taken to remove the pole. At the same time, they are blaming the negligence of the power department for the loss of three lives.

Rangpur Palli Bidyut Samiti's Sundarganj zonal office staff could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, SI Md. Shamsul Islam said the death of three people involved in the electrocution was being investigated. The relatives took the bodies home. The death of three people at once has cast a shadow of mourning over the area.
