Dhaka, January 25: Today is the 199th birth anniversary of epic poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the pioneer of Amitrakshar rhythm in Bengali literature. Mahakabi Michael Madhusudan Dutt was a prominent Bengali poet and dramatist of the 19th century and one of the pioneers of Bengal's renaissance literature.

He was born on January 25, 1824 in the Zamindar Datta family of Sagardandi village on the banks of Kapotaksha river in Keshabpur upazila of Jessore. His father is Zamindar Rajnarayan Dutt and mother Janhabi Devi.

Madhusudan Dutt converted to Christianity in 1853. Since then 'Michael' has been added to his name. Mahakabi Michael Madhusudan Dutt died on 29 June 1873 at Alipore General Hospital.

On the occasion of the the port's birth anniversary, a week-long fair is being held at Sagardari. To entertain the visitors at this year's fair, there will be a circus, magic show and a death well in the pandal, as well as performances by artists from Keshabpur and Jessore in the Madhu Manch, as well as performances by national poets, writers and artists. There are various events for children including Ferris' Wheel. There is also a rural area with cottage industry. One of the attractions of this year's Madhu Mela is the Krishi Mela.

Organized by the Jessore district administration, the week-long Madhu Mela will be inaugurated by KM Khalid, Minister of State for Cultural Affairs.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a message marking the day said, "The unique literary work of the epic poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt is an invaluable asset of Bengali language and literature. He is a bright star in the universe of Bengali literature."

She said that on the occasion of the 199th birth anniversary of the great poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt, she is happy to know that the 7-day long Madhu Mela is being held on January 25-31 at Sagardari in Jessore district. On this occasion, Prime Minister paid deep respect to the memory of Dutt.

She said, "Michael Madhusudan Dutt is a bright star in the sky of Bengali literature. In the writings of this timeless writer, Bengali's sense of nationalism and independent spirit have emerged. His unique literary work is an invaluable asset of Bengali language and literature. The proverbial man of literature Madhusudan Dutta wrote epic poems in Bengali language and pioneered the Amitrakshar rhythm in Bengali poetry.”
