Torture of accused on bail: Two police officers along with judge summoned to High Court

Dhaka, June 13: The High Court has summoned a judge and two high-ranking police officials to explain the case of two persons being arrested and tortured to recover money despite being granted bail by the High Court.

On July 16, Padma Setu South Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Mustafizur Rahman, Shariatpur District Additional Superintendent of Police Russell Monir and Shariatpur Chief Judicial Magistrate appeared before the court and asked the court to explain the matter. At the same time, the court asked the IG of Police and the Superintendent of Police of Shariatpur to explain the position of the accused officers.

The High Court bench comprising of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md. Aminul Islam gave these orders after hearing an application.

Advocate Mojibur Rahman heard the application in court. On the other hand, Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi and Assistant Attorney General Anisur Rahman conducted the hearing for the state.

Later, lawyer Mojibur Rahman said, I got bail from the High Court for the seven accused in the robbery case. After getting bail, two of the seven people were detained by the police and extorted money through torture. Later they were handed over to the court. The court sent the accused to jail without verifying the bail information. Newspaper reports were published in this incident. Then I presented the matter to the court. The court has summoned two police officers and a judge for the hearing. Besides, the Chief of Police and Superintendent of Police of Shariatpur have been asked to explain.

According to the report published in the newspaper, two police officers have been accused of torturing some of the accused and their relatives who got bail from the high court and extorting Tk 72 lakh. The complaint was made against Additional Superintendent of Police of Naria Circle Russell Monir and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Padma Setu South Police Station Sheikh Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman. The victim's elder brother Abu Zafar lodged a complaint with Thandu District Superintendent of Police.
