Dhaka, December 20: Trial production has been started at Rampal Power Plant (coal-based Maitri Super Thermal Power Plant) on Saturday night. In this, 660 MW electricity is being added to the national grid from Unit-1.

Earlier, a Unit-I of Maitri Super Thermal Power Project, 2 (1320 MW) of 660 MW capacity each, was successfully connected to the national grid on August 15. It then supplies 91.7 MW of electricity to the national grid.

An official of the project said on Monday that another 660 MW electricity will be added to the national grid from Unit-2 in June 2023.

BIFPCL Managing Director Syed Ekram Ullah said that the experimental production of Unit-1 has started from Saturday night, we have started supplying electricity commercially. All technical works have been completed by now. The power plant will play an important role in the development of the region as well as strengthening mutual relations between Bangladesh and India. Built at an estimated cost of Tk 16,000 crore, the project aims to generate a total of 1,320 MW of electricity from two units (660 MW each).

Project Deputy Manager Anwarul Azim said that 660 MW of electricity is being produced from the first unit. Already, 79.35 percent of the work of the second unit has been completed. If all goes well, the rest of the work will be completed by June 2023. 660 MW 2 (1320) MW coal-fired thermal power plant is being set up at a cost of about USD 2.0 billion and is located at Rampal in Bagerhat district of Khulna division.

Located on about 915.5 acres of land, 100 percent of the electricity generated from this plant will be supplied within Bangladesh. For transmission and distribution of power from this plant, the construction of 230 KV double circuit line from factory to Khulna and 400 KV double circuit line to Gopalganj has already been completed.
