Twenty sentenced to death in BUET student Abrar murder

Dhaka, December 8: The tribunal has sentenced 20 people to death and five to life imprisonment in a case of beating to death of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad. Judge Abu Jafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman of the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 pronounced the verdict on Wednesday (December 8).

Those who received death sentences are: - Mehedi Hasan Russel, Anik Sarker, Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, Md Mehedi Hasan Robin, Md Meftahul Islam Jeon, Muntassir Alam Jemmy, Khandaker Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Md Muzahidur Rahman, Md Moniruzzaman Monir, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Md Mazedul Islam, Shamim Billah, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Md Mizanur Rahman alias Mizan, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, SM Mahmud Setu, Morsheduzzaman Jisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim, Morshed Amatya Islam and Mostaba Rafid.

Among them three accused Jisan, Tanim and Rafid are absconding.

Meanwhile, Muhtasim Fuad, Moaj Abu Hurayra, Md Akash Hossain, Amit Saha and Istiak Ahammed Munna have been awarded life sentences.

The court also sentenced each of them to one year rigorous imprisonment for non-payment of a fine of Rs 50,000 in addition to life imprisonment.

Earlier in the morning, 22 accused were produced in court from Dhaka Central Jail. The other three accused in the case have been absconding since the beginning.

The verdict was scheduled for November 28. However, as the verdict was not ready, Judge Abu Jafar Md. Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 fixed December 8 for the verdict.

After presenting the arguments of the state and the defendants on November 14, the judge of the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 had fixed November 28 for the pronouncement of the verdict.

Some leaders and activists of BUET Chhatra League called Abrar Fahad on the night of October 6, 2019 for criticizing Bangladesh's various agreements with India and giving him status on Facebook. His body was recovered from the corridor of the two-storied stairwell of Sher-e-Bangla Hall at around 3:00 am on that day.
