Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 25: Two people, including former general secretary of Motijheel Thana Awami League Zahidul Islam Tipu, were shot dead by miscreants at Shahjahanpur in the capital. Another person sustained bullet injury in the incident.

According to Shahjanpur Police Station sources, Jahidul was returning home in a microbus at Shahjahanpur Amtala Raw Bazaar around 9.50 pm on Thursday. When he reached in front of Shahjahanpur Islami Bank Hospital, a miscreant wearing a helmet shot at him. Jahidul and his driver Munna were shot. At that time, college student Preeti Badrunnesa was going in a rickshaw by Jahidul's car. She was also shot by miscreants.

When the three were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the on-duty doctor declared Jahidul and Preeti dead. Munna, the driver who was shot, is currently undergoing treatment in DMCH.

Abdullah Khan, assistant in-charge (ASI) of DMCH, said the three were brought to Dhaka Medical College from Shahjahanpur with gunshot wounds. Among them one woman and one man died. Another person who was shot is undergoing treatment.

Motijheel division's Sabujbagh zone assistant commissioner (AC) Mantosh Biswas said the deceased, Jahidul, was the husband of reserved female councilor Dolly.

Monir Hossain Munna, the driver who was shot, said that he was returning home in a car from AGB Colony in Motijheel with Tipu. There was a traffic jam on the road. As soon as they entered the Amtala Mosque area of Shahjahanpur, a man wearing a helmet-mask fired at them indiscriminately. They both were shot. Later they were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Jahidul Islam Tipu died.

Preeti's rickshaw was next to Tipu's car at the time of the incident. She was accompanied by her friend Sumaiya. Describing the brutal incident, Sumaiya said, "Preeti's home is in Malibagh. She said she would stay at my Tilpapara house as she had guests in her place. I went to get her home. As soon as the rickshaw carrying us stopped at the signal, we heard a loud noise. Hearing the sound, at one stage we both jumped from two sides of the rickshaw."

"After a while, I saw Preeti lying on the ground. She's not getting up. One said that Preeti might have become senseless. Instantly I thought she was unconscious. But after a while I realized she had been shot. She was later taken to hospital where doctors declared her dead," Sumaiya added.
