Two sub-registrars testify against Tarique Rahman, wife Zubaida Rahman

Dhaka, July 10: Two more people have testified against BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case for acquiring wealth beyond known income. They are former sub-registrar of Gulshan Zone Md. Yakub and former sub-registrar of Bogra Aftab Uddin.

They testified in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Asaduzzaman on Sunday. The court then fixed July 16 for the next hearing. In this case, out of 56 witnesses, 33 have finished their testimony.

According to the details of the case, ACC Deputy Director Zahirul Huda filed this case on September 26, 2007 at the capital's Kafrul police station on charges of owning Tk 4 crore 81 lakh 53 thousand 561 beyond the declared income and concealing the information of assets and acquiring assets beyond the known income.

Tarique Rahman, Zubaida Rahman and Tarique Rahman's mother-in-law Iqbal Mand Banu were accused in the case. In 2008, ACC Deputy Director Taufiqul Islam filed a charge sheet against three people. Iqbal Mand Banu was acquitted in this case.

Earlier, on November 1, 2022, the court issued an arrest warrant against Rahman and his wife after taking into account the charge sheet. They are currently absconding. On April 13, 2023, Tarique-Zubaida was charged and ordered to start the trial.
