Two women die as bus driver loses control, hits footbridge in Dhamrai upazila

Dhaka, February 3: At least two women were killed after the friver of a bus lost control and hit a footbridge in Dhaka's Dhamrai Upazila. Two others were injured in the accident that took place at Bathuli bus stand on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in the upazila on Tuesday (February 2) evening.

The deceased were identified as Jahanara Begum, wife of Abdur Rashid of Saturia village in Saturia upazila of Manikganj and Maryam Akhter, wife of Shariful Islam of the same village.

The injured have been identified as Abu Bakkar, son of Maryam and Abdur Rahim, son of late Momin Uddin of Balitha village in Sutipara union of Dhamrai.

Police said that in the evening, a Robin Paribahan bus heading to Paturia from Dhaka came to Bathuli bus stand area and the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the stairs leading to the footover bridge. At that time, four pedestrians, including mother and son were injured.

Later they were taken to Manikganj Sadar Hospital where two died while undergoing treatment. The other two critically injured have been moved to Dhaka Pangu Hospital.

Golra Highway Police Inspector (OC) Monirul Islam said the bodies of the two were recovered. The other two injured have been moved to Dhaka Pangu Hospital. However, the driver could not be arrested.

The police official also said that legal action was being taken in the incident.
