Dhaka, November 13: The human rights of Uighur Muslims in China are being grossly violated, says Bhaskar Rasha, a sculptor widely known for his installation- 71 Genocide and Preparations for the War of Liberation- at Jagannath University.

"Why are the religious businessmen of Bangladesh silent about this?" he asked, adding, "Because they are paid agents of Pakistan and China. Their true identities have been exposed in front of the nation."

He made the remarks at a human chain and protest rally in front of the National Museum in Shahbag on Friday (November 12) afternoon, organized by the Muktijuddho Mancha to protest the persecution of minority Uighur Muslims in China's Xinjiang province.

Speaking at a human chain and protest rally on the occasion of East Turkistan Independence Day on November 12, Bhaskar Rasha said, "In 1971, China supported the genocide carried out by Pakistani forces and took a stand against the liberation war. But we have not forgotten that history. China is still cooperating with Pakistan, the defeated evil power of 1971. The conspiracy of China and Pakistan against the pro-liberation forces is still going on. The Chinese embassy proved this by sending birthday wishes to Khaleda Zia on August 15. Uighur Muslims are being persecuted in Xinjiang province with the help of the state."

Rasha also demanded the support and solidarity of the Bangladesh government towards the independence movement in East Turkistan.

Aminul Islam Bulbul, President of the Muktijuddho Mancha, said that the minority Uighurs living in China's Xinjiang province were being persecuted on a regular basis. The religious, political, social and economic rights of the minority group are being violated with the direct help of the Chinese government, which is a clear violation of international human rights law. Chinese authorities have banned said minorities from wearing the doppa hat, a cultural heritage of the Uighurs, which is a clear violation of human rights.

General Secretary Md. Al Mamun said, "In 1933, the Uyghurs got an independent country called East Turkistan for a short time. Later, China seized it and started torturing the freedom-loving Uighurs, which is still going on."

According to the United Nations, one million Uighur Muslims, including women, are currently being held in Chinese internment camps. The minority Uighur Muslims, victims of persecution in China, have appealed to the international community for help in their struggle for independence," he said.

Al Mamun also called on the international community, including the United Nations, to take necessary steps to end the persecution of Uighurs. "If necessary, the Uighurs must be guaranteed independence by putting strong pressure on China."
