UK pledges support to develop Bangladesh as an aviation hub

Dhaka, July 6: Visiting British International Trade Minister Nigel Huddleston has assured his government's full support to realize the dream of developing Bangladesh as an aviation hub and exchange experiences in the tourism sector.

He said this while meeting with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md. Mahbub Ali at the Rashtriya Guest House Padma in the capital on Wednesday.

The meeting discussed current and future avenues of cooperation in the aviation sector including procurement of new aircraft from Airbus, technical assistance and capacity building as well as holding joint workshops. They also discussed cooperation in the tourism sector, overall trade expansion with an emphasis on the services sector and the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Forum to be held in Dhaka in September this year.

Apart from this, issues related to UK-DCTS Preferential Trading Scheme, support for Rohingyas, upcoming national elections and Bangladesh's candidature for IMO elections in London were also discussed.

The British minister assured the participation of several British companies in the upcoming Commonwealth Trade Fair in Dhaka and massive assistance in disaster management. Huddleston expressed the British government's commitment to further political and financial support and expressed confidence in a free and fair national election in Bangladesh.

The meeting ended with a commitment to take forward the historic and multilateral relationship. Secretary of Aviation and Tourism Somrik, Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh and British High Commissioner in Dhaka joined their respective delegations.
