Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 17 December: The United Nations has lauded Bangladesh for its achievements in overcoming various obstacles in the last 50 years as an independent country.

The United Nations says the country has gained the status of developing country as a member state of the United Nations after a long and difficult journey through war and famine. In addition, the country has sheltered 9 lakh Rohingyas. Besides, the country has come a long way by overcoming misfortunes and disasters.. The UN made the remarks on the occasion of the celebration of the independence of Bangladesh in a letter to Foreign Minister Abdul Momen.

"As a 50-year partner on the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence, we, the UN family in Bangladesh, are celebrating this nation's success with you and we respect those who have played a role in bringing this country to this point," the letter said.

They said that despite the relatively low per capita income, success in maternal and child mortality, immunization, school enrollment and other social indicators in Bangladesh would be exemplary for other countries.

The letter said that it has been recognized in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In addition, Bangladesh has set an example in disaster risk management. Bangladesh is one of the countries with the largest number of troops in UN peacekeeping missions.
