Dhaka, February 26: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has lauded Bangladesh's extraordinary efforts to mitigate the health and socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Guterres praised Bangladesh's success during a virtual meeting with Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Thursday, a Foreign Ministry press release said today.

The UN Secretary General praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's strong commitment to the people of Bangladesh in particular.

Both Guterres and the foreign minister agreed that the Covid-19 vaccine should be considered "for the benefit of the global people."

The Secretary-General praised Bangladesh's generosity in providing shelter to the Rohingya and reiterated that "our common goal is to repatriate Rohingya refugees to Myanmar."

He said the United Nations is ready to assist Bangladesh in resolving the Rohingya issue.

The Foreign Minister briefed the Secretary-General on the steps taken by the government to build a Rohingya shelter in Bahanchar and requested the UN for humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya there.

Momen welcomed the Secretary-General's call for funding for the Climate Fund and informed him that as the current CVF President, Bangladesh will continue to work with the United Nations to achieve climate goals and prepare for the COP-26 conference in Glasgow this year.

The Foreign Minister urged the Secretary-General to use its influence to inspire development partners and international financial institutions to provide benefits, including new assistance arrangements, even for the countries concerned, even after the transition.

During the exchange of views, Guterres noted that the issue of transition should not only be considered a strategic measure based on GDP, but also a multidimensional risk indicator. "Passage should be rewarded, not punished," he said.

The Foreign Minister also discussed the celebration of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence. He invited the Secretary General to attend the celebrations of Mujib Year and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence.

Ambassador Rabab Fatima, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations was present during the meeting.
