UN Secretary General praises Prime Minister's leadership

Dhaka, Jan 22: Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud met UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Uganda. UN Secretary General praised the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This information was shared in a press release sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On Sunday, January 21, the Foreign Minister met the UN Secretary General on the sidelines of the Third South Summit of the Group of 77 nations and China in Kampala, Uganda. In the meeting, the Secretary General noted the importance of Bangladesh's role in reforming the structure of the global economy and praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for championing several global processes led by the United Nations.

On behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud praised the brave and important role of the UN Secretary General in resolving the war in Gaza, Palestine. Besides, the minister requested Antonio Guterres to keep the Rohingya issue at the top of the agenda of the United Nations. Referring to 2024 as the golden jubilee year of Bangladesh's membership in the United Nations, Hasan Mahmood emphasized the need to celebrate it properly. He invited Guterres to come to Bangladesh. Hasan Mahmud also briefed the Secretary General about the country's national parliament elections. He said that a free, fair and peaceful election was held with the participation of the people.

The Foreign Minister is leading the Bangladesh delegation to the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Third Southern Summit of the Group of 77 nations and China in Kampala, Uganda. The Foreign Minister is accompanied by Foreign Secretary Masood Bin Momen, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Muhammad A. Muhith, High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Kenya and Uganda Tarek Muhammad and others.
