Dhaka, January 31, 2021: Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Rabab Fatima has called on the UN Secretary General to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

She called on the UN Secretary-General to pay more attention to the complex situation, saying "if the Rohingya problem is not resolved soon, there could be more instability in the region."

Ambassador Rabab Fatima made the remarks at a briefing at the UN General Assembly on Friday (January 29th) local time on the "UN Annual Report and 2021 Priorities Raised by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres".

She called on the international community to come together to deal with the Corona epidemic in an efficient and effective manner. The Permanent Representative of Bangladesh outlined Bangladesh's national priorities such as ensuring corona vaccination, tackling the urgent climate situation, transitioning from the LDC category, implementation of Agenda 2030, use of digital technology, peacekeeping and tackling the Rohingya crisis.

Emphasizing the importance of building partnership and solidarity as part of the global community's efforts to recover from the epidemic, Ambassador Fatima said, "Eliminate the impending 'vaccine inequality' between different countries and nations which can be led by the United Nations. The same importance should be given to the distribution of vaccines as has been given to the production stage. '

Citing the example of Bangladesh in the transition process from LDCs, he said, "It is very important to stay on the path of transition and ensure time-bound cooperation measures for the LDCs and incentive-based transit routes for LDCs. If this is not done, the hard-won development of these countries will be severely threatened due to the existing fragile situation, including the negative situation due to Corona.

Appreciating the UN Secretary-General's call for world leaders to declare a "climate emergency" until carbon neutrality is achieved, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh said, He called on the world to do the same.

She added, "As the current President of the 47-member Climate Vulnerable Forum, Bangladesh attaches great importance to climate-sensitive countries, especially the least developed countries and small developing islands, in all areas of climate change."
