Dhaka, July 26: A project worth Tk 568 crore is being taken up again to make the Dhaka-Chittagong highway safe and congestion free. Under the project, new underpass U-loop will be constructed on such highways. The initiative is aimed at reducing the risk of accidents and providing sustainable, safe and cost-effective communication systems.

It has been learned that underpasses will be constructed at the intersection of three roads at Paduar Bazar in Comilla on the 93rd kilometer of the highway, including underpasses at the entrances of U-loop and Comilla Sadar Dakshin Upazila and Comilla University.

The total cost of the project, titled 'Construction of six underpasses on Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway and U-loop at Paduar Bazar intersection', has been estimated at Tk 568.93 crore. From now on, the project will be implemented by the Department of Roads and Highways (RHD) in June 2024.

The project is being prepared for presentation by the Planning Commission's Physical Infrastructure Division at the Executive Committee (ECNEC) meeting of the National Economic Council to be held at the NEC Conference Room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Wednesday (July 28th).

Md. Mamun Al-Rashid, Member (Secretary) of the Planning Commission's Physical Infrastructure Division said, "Under the proposed project, Iulup and an underpass will be constructed at Paduar Bazar intersection of Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway (N-1) and Comilla-Chandpur Regional Highway, Comilla Sadar Dakshin Upazila Gate and two underpasses adjacent to Comilla University's Beltali Gate. As a result of the implementation of the project, the Dhaka-Chittagong highway will be risk free. Besides, congestion on the road will be reduced. The Dhaka-Chittagong link road will be used in the future for communication with the northeastern states of India. And that's why it needs enough capacity and mobility to meet current and future traffic needs."

Under the project, construction of 2,142 meters of U-loop approach road, construction of three underpasses of 171 meters, land acquisition, a double cabin pickup, landscape under the project, utility seating and other works, including tree planting, will be completed.

The main objective of the project is to ensure sustainable, safe and cost-effective communication system on the Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway by reducing the risk of accidents.
