United States wants model election in Bangladesh

Dhaka, April 11: US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the eyes of the whole world are on the upcoming national elections of Bangladesh and reiterated the hope that Bangladesh will be a shining example in terms of free and fair elections. At the same time, he said that the United States wants a model election in Bangladesh.

Blinken expressed this expectation in a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen at the US State Department on Monday afternoon local time in Washington. In the meeting, Dr. Momen agreed with the US Secretary of State regarding the importance of free and fair elections in Bangladesh. He reiterated the Bangladesh government's commitment in this regard.

This information was informed in a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday (April 11). It is said that Monday's meeting of foreign ministers of the two countries in Washington was fruitful.

After the meeting, Dr. Abdul Momen said, "One of the important topics discussed at the meeting was free and fair elections in Bangladesh. The United States also wants a model election in Bangladesh. Referring to the meeting on fair elections, Dr. Momen told reporters that I (the US Secretary of State) I said, of course. This is our aim. We also want model elections. You also help us in this regard, so that we can have free, fair and transparent elections."

Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of the two countries expressed their satisfaction with the existing bilateral relations and expressed their desire to strengthen the bilateral relations for the next 50 years based on the strong relations of the last 50 years.

Referring to Bangladesh-United States relations as broad, dynamic and multifaceted, Dr. Momen expressed his hope to improve, expand and strengthen this relationship. He thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the message sent by US President Joe Biden on Bangladesh's Independence Day, which ended with 'Joy Bangla'.

In the meeting, both leaders discussed various bilateral and other issues of mutual interest including strengthening and diversification of economic partnership, solving the Rohingya crisis, climate change, labor rights, civil liberties and elections.
